What is the RTA Vehicle Inspection?

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai requires all registered vehicles to pass a roadworthiness inspection before annual registration renewal. The inspection is conducted at licensed testing centres across Dubai and typically takes 20–40 minutes.


Vehicles older than three years must pass the inspection annually. Brand-new vehicles have a three-year exemption period. Failing the inspection and driving an unregistered vehicle is a finable offence under UAE traffic law.

What Do RTA Inspectors Check?

The RTA inspection covers the following systems:


Lights & Electrical:

  • All headlights (low and high beam), tail lights, brake lights and indicators must be fully functional
  • Hazard warning lights
  • Number plate illumination
  • Dashboard warning lights — the check engine light, ABS warning or airbag light will fail the vehicle

    • Brakes:

  • Brake pad thickness and disc condition
  • Handbrake / parking brake effectiveness
  • ABS system function

    • Tyres:

  • Minimum tread depth (1.6mm UAE legal minimum, 3mm recommended for safety)
  • No sidewall cracking, bulging or exposed wire
  • Correct tyre size matching registration
  • Spare tyre or inflation kit present

    • Steering & Suspension:

  • Excessive play in steering
  • Worn ball joints, tie rods or suspension bushings
  • Shock absorber condition

    • Body & Glass:

  • No severely cracked windscreen in the driver's line of vision
  • No sharp body damage that poses a hazard
  • Registration plates must be present, legible, and match the vehicle

    • Emissions:

  • Exhaust emissions test (diesel and petrol vehicles)
  • No excessive smoke on acceleration

    • Under Bonnet:

  • Serious fluid leaks (oil, coolant, brake fluid)

    • How to Prepare Your Vehicle for RTA Inspection

    One week before the test:

  • Book a pre-inspection check at a trusted workshop
  • Check all exterior and interior lights (easier with a second person)
  • Inspect tyres for tread depth and sidewall condition
  • Check tyre pressures (under-inflation accelerates wear)
  • Confirm no dashboard warning lights are illuminated
  • Ensure windscreen wipers work and washer fluid is filled

    • Day of inspection:

  • Top up all fluid levels (oil, coolant, screenwash, brake fluid)
  • Clean your registration plates so they are clearly legible
  • Ensure your Emirates ID and vehicle registration card are in the vehicle
  • Arrive with a full fuel tank (emissions test is more reliable with adequate fuel)

    What happens if my car fails the RTA inspection?

    You will receive a detailed fail report specifying which items did not pass. You have 10 days to rectify the issues and return for a free re-inspection on the failed items. After 10 days, a new full inspection fee applies. Repeated failures can result in your vehicle being taken off the road.

    Can I drive my car after RTA inspection failure?

    You may drive directly to a repair workshop to fix the identified issues, but technically your registration cannot be renewed until the vehicle passes. Driving an unregistered vehicle on UAE roads carries fines and impoundment risk.
